September ARt Show Closing Reception Featuring Daphne Talkington

Perceptions Yoga, Mindfulness and Art, a nonprofit in Vernon, will feature the work of the September artist of the month Daphne Talkington with an closing public reception on September 27th at 5 pm.Daphne has always been passionate about the arts, having started her own artistic journey with photography. She received an Associate’s Degree in Visual Communication from Ivy Tech Community College in 2018, but it wasn’t until the Covid-19 pandemic that she discovered her newfound love of analog collage art and immediately began collecting old magazines to create her own. She is inspired by music, films, and fellow collage artists. Collaging allows her to quiet the chaos of the world around her, creating new worlds within the pieces themselves.According to the artist, “There is something satisfying about destroying something only to put it back together in a brand-new way that somehow reflects my inner world in that moment in time. Headphones on, I dissect otherwise abandoned magazines and books to reassemble them into surreal and fantastical scenes. The use of vintage magazines in these bizarre new worlds creates a sense of both nostalgia and other worldliness at the same time. I initially discovered collage as an art form by falling in love with other artists’ work online and was inspired by the accessibility of the medium to try it myself. All you really need is a handful of old magazines from the flea market, glue, some scissors, and a dream. That’s all I had when I started in 2021, and I have created over 115 unique works since then. When you look at my collages, I encourage you to let go and allow yourself to be transported into alternate Realities.”At the opening reception on September 6th the public can meet the artist, view work, make purchases, and enjoy food and beverages from 5 to 7 pm. The artist will also be teaching a collage class on September 12 at 6:45 pm that anyone may register to attend by visiting www.perceptionsyoga.org. The closing reception will take place September 27th from 5-7 pm at which time final purchases can be made and artwork taken home.
